Urgency
According the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer will kill more than 50,000
women this year. We are still a long way from beating cancer. Every 3 minutes, another
woman is diagnosed with it in this country. This is why we have partnered with The
Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) to help fight this terrible disease.

About the BCRF
THE BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION: BUILDING ON OUR SUCCESS
"It is very clear that The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has already made a
significant impact on the course of breast cancer research."
-- Larry Norton, MD, Deputy Physician-in-Chief, Director of Breast Cancer Programs,
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; BCRF Scientific Director and Chair, Executive
Board of Scientific Advisors
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as
an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to funding innovative
clinical and translational research. The Foundation supports scientists at leading
medical centers worldwide whose research is focused on achieving prevention and
a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. Currently, more than 90 cents of each
dollar donated to the Foundation goes directly to breast cancer research and awareness
programs.
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer (after skin cancer) in women in
the United States. The American Cancer Society estimated that 207,090 new cases
of invasive breast cancer would be diagnosed in the United States in 2010 and 39,840
women would die from the disease. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about
1 in 35. These statistics, and the fact that clinical research continues to be under-
funded in the public sector, explains the existence of The Breast Cancer Research
Foundation.
Since its inception, the Foundation has raised more than $325 million—over $35.5
million in fiscal year 2010 alone—to support clinical and translational research
at medical institutions across the globe conducting the most advanced and promising
breast cancer research that will help lead to prevention and a cure in our lifetime.
In October 2010, BCRF awarded $33 million to 172 researchers across the United States,
Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. A number of important
advances in breast cancer treatment announced over the past two years—including
the discovery of new genetic risk markers for breast cancer, the finding that lymph
node removal surgery may be unnecessary for some women with breast cancer, and the
publication of a study demonstrating the link between obesity and breast inflammation—were
made possible in part by grants from BCRF.
BCRF keeps administrative costs as low as possible, and in fiscal 2010, our overhead
was under 9% of revenues. As a result, the Foundation has 4 stars from Charity Navigator
for nine consecutive years, outperforming 99% of more than 5,500 evaluated charities.
Further, we are consistently listed as an “A+” charity by The American Institute
of Philanthropy (AIP). BCRF is the only breast cancer organization to receive AIP’s
top accolade, and we are currently the only cancer organization to hold this ranking.
